A Break from School

I have completely ignored the blog since summer has started...but I have not ignored my social circle. Cooper Young seems to be the place to hang out. Here is a pic of me and my friend, Kim having some fun on a weeknight!

My OH Mylar!

At the Institute for Digital Fabrication at Ball State University, students used the lasercut mylar to produce shapes and joints to create these beautiful lighting fixtures. They are really fascinating...the program also called. i.M.A.D.E is at the frontier of object design. Posted below are some photographs of the work.

Earth Science

Science is hip! On several websites, I have found people using old test tubes and beakers as vases for plants and flowers. It looks very cool and the odd shapes of the lab gear offer a fun and new way to add plants into the home. Some are hanging, wall mounted, and stabilized on a table...I may have to visit Chicago's American Science and Surplus store to pick of some beakers!

Trash or Treasure?

Roger Brown, a local Chicago artist, was a talented painter and avid collector. He studied at SAIC and bequeathed his estate to The School after his death in 1997. The Roger Brown Study Collection is a two-story studio and home that holds many of Brown's paintings and collections.

Brown studied under Ray Yoshida, who also had large collections and who taught Brown to collect. Yoshida pressed the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." He took many of his classes to the Market on Maxwell Street. (which is no longer there, sadly) Every wall in his house has something found or acquired hanging. Some people would consider it a mild case of hoarding but I this his arrangements resemble a large installation. The first photograph is of Brown in front of his home/studio on N. Halsted, and the other photographs were taken inside his home.

Stepping into his home is a unique experience and a trip I would suggest making if you are in Chicago!
